1939: il centenario delle ferrovie italiane

1,25 lire: l'«Elettrotreno» ETR.200, il più moderno e prestigioso mezzo del tempo, è ritratto accanto alla replica della Bayard, appositamente realizzata nel 1939 dalle Officine di Firenze.
Come noto, la Bayard fu una delle primissime locomotive che entrarono in servizio sulla Napoli-Portici nel 1839, e la più antica di cui si sono conservati i disegni originali: questa fu la ragione per cui, un secolo dopo, si decise di replicare proprio questa macchina.

The most modern train of 1939 («Elettrotreno» ETR.200) is shown together with the reconstruction of the Bayard, one of the first engines that were used in 1839 on the Napoli-Portici railway.
The Bayard was rebuilt in 1939, based on the original drawings, just as the German «Adler». Then, it has been placed in the Science Museum of Milan up to 1989, when it was used for few days during the celebrations for 150 years of railways in Italy. Finally, it has been transferred to National Railway Museum of Pietrarsa (Naples); this Museum was closed "for renovation" in 2002(!), so that now the Bayard is not accessible to public.
As to the ETR.200, they wrote some of the most glorious pages of Italian fast trains, mainly on the Milan-Rome-Naples route. They have been reconstructed to ETR.220 in the Sixties, and used especially on the Genoa-Milan-Venice-Trieste line. They ended regular services around 1997. Two units still exist out of work, and are waiting for a repair.
